The Ministry of Education marked the 170th anniversary of the Battle of Sardinal on Apr. 10, highlighting its significance in Costa Rica’s history during the National Campaign of 1856-1857.
The commemoration is considered important for promoting historical memory and civic education among students. The event aims to reinforce national identity and recall a key moment when Costa Rican forces defended their sovereignty.
According to the Ministry, this historic date was added to the school calendar through Executive Decree No. 38322-MEP-MP, which has been in effect since 2014. The decree was intended to encourage awareness about national history within educational settings.
The Battle of Sardinal is recognized as Costa Rica’s second victory against filibuster forces, following success at Santa Rosa on March 20, 1856. After that battle, Costa Rican troops pursued enemy forces moving northward. The engagement at Sardinal played a strategic role by preventing an incursion toward the country’s interior via SarapiquÃ, thereby safeguarding territorial integrity during a period when military operations risked expanding across multiple fronts.
Broader commemorative activities also took place around this time, including events such as regional chess tournaments for students and initiatives promoting sports for development and peace. Additionally, international observances like World Autism Awareness Day and International Children’s Book Day were acknowledged within educational programs.
