Liga Deportiva Alajuelense was unable to secure a home victory in their match against Puntarenas FC, ending the game with a 2-2 draw at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto. This result extends Alajuelense’s winless streak, following a previous draw against Guadalupe and a loss to Motagua.

The match saw several dramatic moments. Joel Campbell, returning from a period of inactivity, played an important role for Alajuelense during his 61 minutes on the field. Early in the game, Campbell hit the post with a powerful shot and later won a penalty in the 29th minute. He allowed Mexican teammate Ronaldo Cisneros to take the kick, who converted it for his first goal in Costa Rican football.

Puntarenas FC responded before halftime when Andrey Mora scored from a set piece in the 41st minute. In the second half, an own goal by Alajuelense defender Aarón Salazar gave Puntarenas FC a temporary lead. The home team managed to equalize through Creichel Pérez in the 77th minute.

The video assistant referee (VAR) played a role late in the match by disallowing what would have been a winning goal for Alajuelense due to offside.

Alajuelense’s coach Ɠscar RamĆrez made tactical changes throughout the game, including substituting Campbell and Cisneros for Anthony HernĆ”ndez and Jeison LucumĆ at minute 61 to increase attacking options. Despite these efforts, Alajuelense could not secure three points.

Team captain Alexis Gamboa led Alajuelense on the field due to Celso Borges’ absence because of injury.

Following this result, Alajuelense will travel to Honduras for their next fixture against Motagua on September 30 as part of the Concacaf Central American Cup quarterfinals.

Both teams are seeking points to improve their positions in a tightly contested league table as they aim for playoff spots this season.
