Players from Alajuelense celebrated on the field at Estadio Nacional “Chelato” Uclés in Honduras after defeating Motagua, securing a direct spot in the Concacaf Champions League and keeping their hopes alive for a third consecutive regional title.
Following the match, Alajuelense coach Óscar ‘Macho’ Ramírez spoke to the media about his team’s tactical adaptability and addressed comments made by Motagua goalkeeper Luis Ortiz. Ramírez emphasized the importance of professionalism and respect among players, stating: “As professionals, we should not speak about our rivals because it gives them extra motivation, and nothing should be given away. Many times it touches on pride. There must be respect and consideration among professionals, and emotions should be kept in check.”
Ramírez highlighted the challenges faced during the game, including an early penalty against his team but praised his players’ response: “It is not easy to come here; I already had experience as a player and coach. We have to recognize the personality of this team. The penalty unsettled us a bit, but we had the ability to react. In the second half, logically Motagua pulled back and we managed our substitutions well. We talked about how the goal could come at any time.”
He also discussed using younger players: “You can’t imagine what it’s like to have almost seven under-21 players on the bench. The learning experience is tremendous; each player who came in did their job without deviating from our plan.” He added: “With the score 2-0 against us here, having conviction meant that as things got harder, our team pushed forward even more. This result gives us a great pass to Concachampions, but in crises something extra has to emerge. I told my players this is our DNA—pushing through adversity.”
Addressing tactical changes during the match, Ramírez explained: “I thought Motagua would take a more reserved approach so I maintained three defenders at first. They pressured us early with higher fullbacks so we adapted because versatility is necessary for any team.” He referenced PSG coach Luis Enrique’s philosophy: “When a team becomes predictable it’s difficult; with enough study they can minimize you significantly.”
Regarding Joel Campbell’s return from injury and its significance for both club and national teams, Ramírez said: “When I lost Joel against Guadalupe it upset me because he worked hard on recovery—dieting and extra training—and then was injured again due to rushing back too soon. On Friday against Puntarenas he played 60 minutes; now he completed this match. Joel can set up a striker in front of goal. For the national team, he wants to be there.”
The victory comes amid recent internal issues related to player discipline within Alajuelense’s squad.
