Andrey Campos, a commentator for Radio Columbia, said on March 23 that he was close to joining Ajax, the most prominent football club in the Netherlands, following his participation in the 1997 FIFA World Youth Championship as a member of Costa Rica’s national team.
Campos made this statement during the pre-game coverage of the match between Saprissa and San Carlos. The revelation came after Gustavo Pérez, sporting director of Herediano and an attendee at the game as a fan, praised Campos for his abilities as a player.
“The truth is that many people may not believe it, but there are records out there. I had the opportunity to go to Ajax Amsterdam, also to Albacete, but early on I suffered a serious injury that kept me out for a long time and then I couldn’t return to the level I had at the start,” Campos said.
Campos explained that his career was affected by a torn cruciate ligament in one of his knees. This injury prevented him from reaching his full potential as a professional footballer.
The conversation began when Pérez commented that Campos was an exceptional player who could have achieved much more than he did. Campos played for Herediano and became a notable figure at San Carlos during his playing days.
