The governments of Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and the Dominican Republic have issued a joint statement congratulating Nasry “Tito” Asfura on his election as president of Honduras following the November 30 vote. The countries expressed their intention to work together with the new administration after it takes office on January 27. Areas highlighted for cooperation include trade, security, migration, and strengthening democracy in the region.
The statement recognized the civic responsibility shown by Honduran citizens during the election process. “We highlight the civic responsibility shown by citizens in exercising their right to vote and their patience while awaiting the final count, demonstrating a commendable commitment to peace and institutional stability,” the joint communiqué said.
International observers were also acknowledged for their roles in monitoring the electoral process. “We also acknowledge the work carried out by the Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) of the Organization of American States (OAS), as well as that of the European Union, who were present throughout the sensitive period following voting. Their presence, along with national observers, contributed to an exhaustive and impartial review of the process, providing clarity to citizens regarding the legitimacy of results,” according to the statement.
The countries noted how Honduras’s National Electoral Council (CNE) performed its duties under pressure over recent weeks. “We take note of the performance of the National Electoral Council (CNE) amid pressures during this last month, highlighting staff responsibility nationwide and leadership demonstrated by council members in fulfilling their mandate,” they stated.
Finally, solidarity was expressed with Honduras and hopes for a peaceful transition were conveyed. “We reaffirm our solidarity with the Honduran people and express our wish that this transition unfolds peacefully and orderly, contributing to national coexistence.”
