An Argentine tourist who has been staying in Costa Rica for three months said on March 21 that he received unexpected negative comments after sharing his daily beach routine on social media.

The tourist posted a video on TikTok describing how he visits the beach every morning to sit and watch the sea. He later explained in another video that the reaction from viewers was not what he anticipated, as many criticized him and even suggested he should leave Costa Rica.

“The video exploded and people commented: ‘What are you doing? Go back to your country, you’re here illegally, this and that.’ Now my question is, what bothers you about a foreigner coming here on vacation? What is the problem?” he said. He added, “I really want to know, let me know in the comments what the problem is and what really bothers you. Because if there is something that bothers you, I would like to know.”

In response to his videos, some Costa Rican commenters explained that their reactions might be related to concerns about gentrification and noted they may not have realized he was only visiting temporarily. Others expressed hospitality and thanked him for his positive remarks about Costa Rican beaches.

The situation highlights ongoing conversations about tourism, local sentiment toward foreigners, and issues such as gentrification in popular destinations.
