The Artemis II astronauts shared their experiences on April 12 during a welcome ceremony at Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base in Houston, Texas. The crew, which included Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency, Christina Koch, Victor Glover, and commander Reid Wiseman, spoke about their historic lunar flyby mission and urged people to appreciate Earth’s place in the universe.

The significance of the Artemis II mission lies in its achievements as the first crewed flight under NASA’s program aimed at establishing a sustained presence on the Moon. The crew completed a gravity-assisted maneuver around the Moon—the first such feat by humans in over fifty years—and traveled farther into space than any previous human explorers before returning with a successful splashdown off California’s coast.

NASA celebrated what it described as a victory following the safe return of its astronauts. During their press conference, Koch reflected on her impressions from space: “What struck me was not necessarily just Earth itself; it was all the blackness surrounding it. The Earth was simply this lifeboat hanging calmly in the universe.” She added: “There is something new that I now know, and it’s this: planet Earth, you are a crew.”

Hansen addressed those watching from home by saying: “I would suggest that when you look here, you’re not looking at us. We are a mirror reflecting you.” He continued: “And if you like what you see, then just look a little deeper. This is you.”

While orbiting deep space and circling around the Moon, the Artemis II team captured thousands of photographs to document their journey.

Looking ahead, NASA intends for future missions to build upon these achievements with plans for permanent installations on the Moon that could serve as stepping stones for exploration beyond lunar orbit.
