Banco de Costa Rica (BCR) has announced that on Wednesday, November 26, it will offer for sale the final coin in the “Fauna de los Ecosistemas” collection issued by the Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR). The release consists of 2,500 coins featuring the mountain rabbit. Of these, 700 will be available in a case and 1,800 in an acrylic presentation, each priced at ¢8,600.
Sales will take place at selected BCR branches across the country, including locations in San José (Central Offices, Paseo Colón, San Rafael de Escazú), Guanacaste (Liberia and Nicoya), Alajuela (Barrio San José), Puntarenas, Cartago, Limón, Heredia, and Quepos. Each branch will have a limited supply and sales will continue until stocks run out.
According to BCCR guidelines, customers may purchase up to two coins per person. This limit is intended to allow more people access to the coin and prevent later speculation. The BCCR also notes that there will be a regular circulation version of the coin without color elements for use as legal tender with a face value of ₡50.
The mountain rabbit depicted on the coin is described as small with relatively short ears and tail. It lives primarily above 1,100 meters in areas such as the highlands of Parque Internacional La Amistad—a protected region shared by Costa Rica and Panama. The species is active during dusk and night hours and feeds on plant material found in humid forests, grasslands, and moorlands. While considered endangered internationally, it remains common within Costa Rica’s protected wild areas.
“The images of the coin and information about the species were shared by BCCR.”
