Banco Promerica has continued its involvement in the “Tu Banca a un Clic” program, which aims to bridge the digital divide for older adults in Costa Rica. The bank joined the initiative in 2023 as the first financial institution to participate in this pilot project, motivated by a recognized need to improve digital access among senior citizens.
In the latest edition of the program, 160 older adults completed a comprehensive 40-hour course over ten weeks. According to Banco Promerica, one of the main challenges was maintaining participant engagement throughout all sessions. The results indicate that with proper support, significant progress can be made in helping older adults adopt new technologies.
The program was organized by the Asociación Bancaria Costarricense (ABC) and included participation from additional financial institutions this year, expanding its reach and strengthening a national vision for financial inclusion.
Participants were required to complete a practical cybersecurity exam as part of their training, learning how to identify fraudulent websites and navigate digital banking platforms securely. Some participants shared their experiences: “Three ladies told us: ‘I already paid a bill through the app, just to build confidence.’ That is the kind of impact that changes lives.”
Banco Promerica’s leadership views its participation as an opportunity not only for digital education but also for fostering real financial inclusion with a social focus. “Being able to provide tools that generate independence, quality education and digital inclusion for older adults benefits everyone. It helps us build a more equitable and prepared society,” according to statements from the bank.
Currently, Banco Promerica has five certified financial facilitators who have begun replicating this model in other communities on a smaller scale. The bank intends to continue scaling up these efforts and remain actively involved alongside other banks in Costa Rica.
The bank emphasized its ongoing commitment: “The commitment of the bank is clear: keep opening digital doors with closeness, empathy and real support because every click made confidently by an older adult is proof that financial inclusion is working.”
