Banco de Costa Rica (BCR) Seguros announced on March 30 new and renewed student insurance options as children and young people begin the 2026 academic year. The company said these policies provide coverage for accidents both inside and outside educational centers, with benefits available at any time of day throughout the year.

The announcement comes as families prepare for possible unforeseen events during the school period. BCR Seguros said that having a student insurance policy helps parents or guardians handle unexpected medical expenses caused by accidents, while ensuring timely access to private healthcare services.

Among the main features of the student insurance are accessible premiums tailored to different budgets, simple digital contracting processes, round-the-clock accident coverage every day of the year, and protection both within and outside schools. The company also highlighted that policyholders can receive medical attention in private hospitals and clinics for emergencies.

“Los accidentes pueden ocurrir en cualquier momento y en muchos casos generan gastos médicos imprevistos. Contar con un seguro estudiantil brinda un respaldo económico ante estas situaciones, además de facilitar el acceso oportuno a atención médica privada, reduciendo el impacto financiero para las familias,” said Rebeca Martínez, Gerente General de BCR Corredora de Seguros.

BCR Seguros works with several insurers including Instituto Nacional de Seguros (INS) and Seguros del Magisterio. Customers may also request quotes from any insurer registered with the Superintendencia General de Seguros (SUGESE), provided their products meet regulatory requirements.

Premiums start at ¢6,622 for an insured amount of ¢500,000 and go up to ¢21,995 for coverage up to ¢5 million. Coverage includes accidents; medical expenses such as consultations, tests, hospitalization, surgeries and medications related to an accident; compensation in case of permanent or partial disability; and accidental death benefits.

The availability of various insurers through BCR aims to give families flexibility when choosing appropriate protection plans as students return to classrooms.
