Cartaginés managed to keep their hopes alive after a 0-0 draw against Vancouver Whitecaps in the first leg of their Concacaf Champions Cup series. The match, played at Estadio José Rafael “Fello” Meza, saw Cartaginés avoid conceding an away goal, which is significant due to its use as a tiebreaker. Both teams will head into the second leg with equal chances of advancing.
The game was marked by strong tactical discipline from Cartaginés and several defensive interventions. Goalkeeper Kevin Briceño stopped three long-range attempts, while defender Diego Mesén cleared a ball off the goal line. Despite dominating possession and pace early on, Vancouver could not convert their opportunities.
Thomas Müller, the German World Cup winner from 2014 and a key attraction for fans, started on the bench for Vancouver but entered in the second half. Before the match, Müller expressed his enthusiasm for participating in the Concacaf tournament and praised Estadio Fello Meza as “beautiful,” stating that he was eager for the season to begin.
In pre-match comments, Cartaginés player Cristopher Núñez said: “A motivation to be able to face him; everyone knows his career, that he is a great player. We are focused on what we can do, on what we are going to show on the field and we are fully motivated.”
Núñez also highlighted: “It will be a very nice match to play; the group is motivated, we know what is at stake and we are at home. In football nothing is written; it’s eleven against eleven and we will try to get the result.”
Reflecting on facing Vancouver Whitecaps, Núñez added: “Everyone knows that all eyes will be on us in this match; it’s a good showcase but here what matters most is the team. We are focused on getting a good result and that’s most important.”
He also commented: “We saw their strengths and weaknesses and will try to exploit those weaknesses they have. They have a very good midfield and we’ll look to press them.”
Cartaginés returned to play an international match at Estadio Fello Meza for the first time since 1997 when they last hosted a Concacaf Champions League game there.
Coach Amarini Villatoro emphasized that these types of matches should become more regular for Cartaginés rather than waiting many years between appearances in continental competitions.
Both teams made tactical changes throughout the match. For Cartaginés, substitutions aimed at increasing attacking pressure nearly paid off late in the game but did not result in goals.
The second leg of this round-of-16 series is scheduled for next Wednesday at 8:30 p.m., where both clubs remain level with everything still open.
