From April 7 to 23, 2026, preschool and first cycle primary students from both public and private schools in Costa Rica will have the opportunity to attend the children’s theater production “Caminito del mar.” The event is part of the “Érase una vez” program, a collaboration between the Ministry of Public Education (MEP), the Ministry of Culture and Youth, and the National Theater of Costa Rica.
The initiative aims to use theater as an educational tool to encourage imagination, artistic sensitivity, and early interest in reading among young students. Jacqueline Badilla Jara from MEP stated: “We believe that the classroom has no boundaries. By experiencing theater, preschool and primary students not only watch a play: they develop reading skills, artistic sensitivity, and understanding of the world. Caminito del Mar is a space where imagination helps to coexist, resolve conflicts, and build peace.”
The play follows Clementina, a doll who embarks on a journey to bring the sea to her friend, Captain de Marineros. Accompanied by 15 characters—including Professor Clotilde and Jules Verne—the story highlights themes such as friendship, creativity, dreams, and the value of literature.
Teachers and school administrators interested in participating must register their groups through this link (limited spaces): https://www.mep.go.cr/programas-proyectos/erase-vez. Schools are responsible for arranging transportation and meals for their students.
For logistical matters related to participation in this event, Melvin Gómez Quesada—national advisor for the program—can be contacted via Microsoft Teams or at phone number 8928-2049.
The program encourages schools to explore new ways of learning through arts-based experiences.
