The Compañía Nacional de Fuerza y Luz (CNFL) has submitted a proposal to the Public Services Regulatory Authority (ARESEP) to reduce electricity distribution rates by 9.07%. If approved, the new rates would take effect on January 1, 2026, and impact approximately 627,000 CNFL customers.
The proposed reduction is based on two main factors: lower internal costs at CNFL over the past decade and a decrease in electricity generation prices during the last two years. The company stated that its request follows current tariff methodologies and recent regulatory decisions.
Luis Fernando Andrés Jácome, general manager of CNFL, said, “This tariff request supports Grupo ICE’s commitment to maintain competitive rates in balance with quality and continuous service. The Company has made an effort to use resources efficiently as well as timely investment that demonstrates the public value of the service.”
Marco Acuña, president of Grupo ICE, added, “The Company’s request follows the line we have announced in recent weeks. We reiterate that ICE and CNFL rates will go down in 2026 and with this we will benefit all customers in the country, including distributors to whom the Institute sells electricity.”
According to CNFL estimates, a residential customer using 280 kilowatt-hours per month would see a reduction of ₡1,854 on their electric bill if the proposed decrease is implemented. This change could ease household electricity expenses starting next year.
CNFL clarified that this proposal only addresses its own cost structure. Additional changes may occur depending on adjustments related to Variable Generation Cost (CVG) and extraordinary reviews by ARESEP.
