CoopeAgri has started producing Demerara sugar at its Ingenio El General Milton Fonseca Balmaceda mill, marking a new stage in the organization’s efforts to diversify its product offerings. The launch of this special sugar during the 2024-2025 harvest is part of CoopeAgri’s strategy to enter new markets and offer products with distinct qualities.

Demerara sugar undergoes less processing than standard sugars and retains more natural minerals. It is recognized for its large, golden crystals and is targeted at consumers interested in natural and sustainable options.

The production process required changes at the mill and involved strict quality controls. These adjustments were made possible by the technical experience of CoopeAgri’s team and support from local sugarcane producers.

The initiative aligns with CoopeAgri’s ongoing plans for sustainability, modernization, and innovation as it seeks to strengthen its position in Costa Rica’s Brunca region and the wider agroindustrial sector.
