This month, in recognition of the environment, Coopetarrazú is focusing on raising awareness about sustainable agriculture and the use of biological inputs, or BioInsumos. The cooperative’s advisor, Roberto Naranjo, shared his perspective on sustainable farming practices and the role of BioInsumos in an interview.
Naranjo defined sustainable agriculture as “the balance between social, environmental, and economic factors. Sustainability is an activity that must last for at least twenty-five years over time, where we ourselves innovate and make better use of resources to nourish and strengthen the soil that provides for us.”
He emphasized the importance of effective management of microorganisms, soil care, and sustainable practices such as using shade. According to Naranjo, these measures contribute positively to the environment and leave a better legacy for future generations. “The greater the effectiveness in managing microorganisms, caring for soils, and practicing sustainability like using shade, the greater our contribution to the environment and the better legacy we will leave to future generations,” he said.
Discussing current challenges facing soil fertility, Naranjo pointed out several causes: “This condition generally occurs due to practices such as uncovered soils, excessive use of herbicides, deforestation of areas not suitable for agriculture—that is, areas prone to erosion.” He added that wind and rain further degrade soils by eroding their organic matter and essential nutrients like calcium and magnesium. In Costa Rica specifically, poor management of crops such as maize, cocoa, coffee, and pineapple has led to serious consequences for soil health.
