Costa Rica marked the 170th anniversary of the Battle of Rivas and the heroic actions of Juan Santamaría on April 11. The commemoration took place across the country, with special significance in Alajuela province, where educational communities held ceremonies to honor these historical events.
The Battle of Rivas, which occurred in Nicaragua during the National Campaign of 1856-1857, is remembered as a key moment in Costa Rican history. The conflict aimed to expel filibuster forces led by William Walker from Central America. For nearly twenty hours, both sides engaged in intense fighting until a decisive action was ordered: setting fire to the Mesón de Guerra to force out Walker’s men. Juan Santamaría, known as “the drummer from Alajuela,” lost his life during this act, which has since become a symbol of national bravery and sovereignty.
According to statements from organizers, this annual event reinforces national identity and civic values among students. The initiative is developed by PROCOMER in coordination with the Ministry of Education (MEP) and other institutions.
The remembrance also highlights other important dates incorporated into Costa Rica’s school calendar through Executive Decree No. 38322-MEP-MP since 2014. These include commemorations such as the Battle of Sardinal—another significant event during the National Campaign—as well as international observances like World Autism Awareness Day on April 2 and International Children’s Book Day.
In addition to historical commemorations, recent educational initiatives were noted. The Ministry of Education announced an alliance with CENECOOP R.L., delivering ninety thousand scholarships for training teachers and education leaders across Costa Rica in artificial intelligence applied to education.
Organizers say that such efforts are intended not only to preserve historical memory but also prepare students for future challenges through innovation and inclusion.
