Each year on March 8, Costa Rica marks the Day of School Cafeteria Workers, a tradition established in 1998 by Decree No. 27063-MEP. The day is intended to honor those who contribute daily to the educational community.
The establishment of this commemoration follows a decision made in 1994 to implement student cafeterias in all schools across the country. This initiative was part of broader social equity programs designed to support student well-being and encourage continued school attendance.
Costa Rica recently joined the School Meals Coalition, an effort led by the United Nations World Food Programme that brings together more than 100 countries aiming to ensure every child receives a healthy and nutritious meal at school by 2030.
Francisca “Pancha” Carrasco Jiménez was declared Benemérita de la Patria in 2025 for her role as the first woman to join Costa Rica’s National Army during the National Campaign of 1856-1857 and for her contributions to peace and democracy.
March 8 also coincides with International Women’s Day, which recognizes women’s historical struggles for equality, labor rights, political participation, and social justice.
In related events, Minister of Public Education Leonardo Sánchez unveiled a plaque honoring Uladislao “Lalo” Gámez Solano—the first Minister of Education in Costa Rica’s Second Republic—at the Colegio Técnico Profesional named after him.
This month will also see the return of an educational program on Canal 13 that has been significant for many Costa Ricans over the years.
Additionally, each year commemorates the military conflict between Costa Rica and Panama over the Coto territory. The dispute was resolved through international agreements signed in 1900, with key battles occurring from February 21 to March 5, 1921.
