The Costa Rican government announced on April 13 the launch of Hello Brete, a new virtual platform that will provide free English courses to thousands of people. The initiative was introduced by President Rodrigo Chaves Robles and is supported by the National Learning Institute (INA), the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS), and the Ministry of Science, Innovation, Technology and Telecommunications (MICITT).

Hello Brete aims to offer up to 500,000 licenses per year for Costa Ricans aged 15 or older who want to learn or improve their English skills. The program seeks to increase access to language education and boost employment opportunities.

The Hello Brete platform features live lessons, self-study classes available at any time of day or night, voice recognition tools for pronunciation practice, artificial intelligence support for learning assistance, and multimedia study materials. Registration is open through hellobrete.com; participants must take a placement test but do not need prior knowledge of English. Upon completion of the course participants will receive an INA-Open English certificate.

As part of the program’s benefits teachers from public schools and INA will participate in refresher training sessions.
