Costa Rica recognizes new Honduran president after recent elections

Costa Rica has expressed its support for the recent electoral process in Honduras, recognizing the work of the National Electoral Council (CNE) in organizing, conducting, and overseeing the elections. The country also acknowledged the role played by international electoral observation missions.

In a statement, Costa Rica commended the people of Honduras for their significant and peaceful participation in the elections. “Costa Rica expresses its firm support for the development of the electoral process in the Republic of Honduras and recognizes the work carried out by the National Electoral Council (CNE) in organizing, conducting, and scrutinizing the recently held elections in that country, as well as the role of international electoral observation missions,” said Costa Rican authorities.

The statement continued: “It greets the Honduran people for their massive and peaceful participation in the electoral day, a clear expression of their democratic vocation and commitment to institutional means for resolving their differences.”

Costa Rica officially recognized Nasry Juan (Tito) Asfura Zablah as president-elect of Honduras according to results proclaimed by Honduras’ CNE. “Costa Rica recognizes Nasry Juan (Tito) Asfura Zablah as president-elect of the Republic of Honduras, according to results officially proclaimed by the National Electoral Council, and wishes him success in the high office entrusted to him by the Honduran people,” read part of Costa Rica’s message.

The government reaffirmed its adherence to democratic principles and called on all political and social actors in Honduras to respect official results. “Costa Rica reaffirms once again its adherence to democratic principles, rule of law, unrestricted respect for popular will expressed at polls, and peaceful alternation in power—fundamental pillars of the inter-American system. In this regard, it calls on all political and social actors in Honduras to respect official results issued by the National Electoral Council.”

Finally, Costa Rica reiterated its willingness to strengthen friendly relations with Honduras: “It also reiterates its willingness to continue strengthening ties of friendship, cooperation, and solidarity that have historically united both countries.”
