The Ministry of Health announced on April 28 that Costa Rica achieved a significant reduction in infant mortality over the past year, reaching a rate of 8.44 deaths per thousand births. This figure is based on data from Vital Statistics provided by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC).
According to the Ministry, this new rate marks an improvement compared to the previous year’s rate of 10.21 deaths per thousand births. The Ministry said this means more children are surviving and growing up, which it attributes to a stronger health system and commitment from families and healthcare workers.
“This result encourages us to continue working with responsibility and evidence so that every boy and girl in Costa Rica has a safe start in life,” the Ministry said.
Despite this progress, officials noted there are still important challenges ahead for child health in Costa Rica. The announcement highlights ongoing efforts to further improve outcomes for newborns.
The Ministry concluded by stating that Costa Rica continues advancing in its efforts to protect life.
