David Hernández, candidate of the Partido de la Clase Trabajadora (PT), questioned Fabricio Alvarado, presidential hopeful for the Partido Nueva República (PNR), during the second debate organized by the Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones (TSE). Hernández referred to an ongoing accusation against Alvarado for alleged sexual abuse of a minor.
Hernández highlighted that women are among the groups facing the highest levels of insecurity in Costa Rica. He stated that the country is experiencing an “epidemic of sexist violence,” pointing to increases in femicides and reports of abuse. In this context, he mentioned that some authorities have been sanctioned for sexual harassment and referenced directly the complaint filed against Alvarado.
“Without going any further, we have a president who was sanctioned for sexual harassment, and you, Mr. Fabricio, have received a complaint for sexual abuse of a minor,” said Hernández.
“How can women feel in a situation like the one I describe?” asked Hernández. He argued that from his perspective, Alvarado should not be participating in the electoral race.
Alvarado rejected these accusations and described them as part of a “dirty campaign.” He responded: “It does not surprise me at all that the left engages in this kind of accusation instead of making proposals. Here we are facing things head-on.” He added that the case is under review by both the Public Prosecutor’s Office and Judicial Branch and assured he has never hidden nor will do so. Alvarado also said his political platform aims to protect women in Costa Rica.
A 32-year-old woman accused Alvarado of alleged sexual abuse dating back to 2006 when she was 13 years old and he was 32. The complaint was filed on February 18, 2025 with the Ministerio Público; her statement was expanded on August 7 of that year.
On November 3, twenty-five deputies approved a motion in the plenary session of the Legislative Assembly for Alvarado to face proceedings regarding this complaint according to established procedures.
