Disney has released the first official trailer for its live-action adaptation of “Moana,” scheduled to premiere in July 2026. The announcement was made on Monday, highlighting the return of some key elements from the original animated film.
Catherine Laga’aia will portray Moana in this new version. The trailer features her character journeying through tropical landscapes and singing “How Far I’ll Go,” a song that played a central role in the original movie.
Dwayne Johnson is also returning as Maui, the shapeshifting demigod. Although only seen from behind in the preview, Johnson’s presence suggests his character will again play a significant part in Moana’s adventure.
The trailer introduces other familiar characters, including the Kakamora—tiny pirate antagonists—and Heihei, the clumsy rooster known for comic relief. Both appeared in the 2016 animated film.
Disney confirmed that the film will be released in theaters across the United States on July 10, 2026. Release dates for Latin America have not yet been announced.
Fans have reacted with enthusiasm on social media by sharing clips from the trailer and recalling memories of the original movie, which grossed over $643 million worldwide when it was released eight years ago.
Currently, two animated “Moana” films are available for streaming on Disney+, where audiences continue to follow Moana’s adventures.
“Disney sets sail once more into the heart of the ocean with its first look at live-action Moana,” said Disney representatives. “The official trailer invites viewers to dive into a dazzling visual journey and a reinterpretation that promises to pay tribute—and at the same time renew—the magic of the original animated film.”
