Eight-year-old boy critically injured by gunshot in Esparza

An eight-year-old boy was seriously injured after being shot in the chest on Tuesday night in Esparza, Puntarenas. The incident took place at the entrance to the CalderĂłn neighborhood.

According to the Costa Rican Red Cross, they received a report around 9 p.m. Upon arrival, emergency responders found the child wounded on a public road.

The boy was treated at the scene and then taken urgently to Monseñor Sanabria Hospital in Puntarenas. He remains in critical condition.

Authorities have not yet determined how the shooting occurred.
