Caleb Flynn, a former pastor and Christian singer known for his appearance on the reality show American Idol, has been charged by Ohio authorities with the murder of his wife. Officials allege that Flynn attempted to make the crime appear as a robbery.
According to reports from international media such as People, Flynn’s 37-year-old wife died in their home during the early hours of February 16. Flynn was the one who called 9-1-1 to report what he described as a robbery.
However, the narrative changed on Thursday when Flynn, age 39, was arrested. He now faces charges including murder, two counts of felonious assault, and two counts of tampering with evidence.
Flynn is currently being held on $2 million bail. At his first court hearing, he pleaded not guilty. In a statement obtained by People magazine from L. Patrick Mulligan, Flynn’s attorney said: “We are disappointed and concerned about the short timeline and what appears to be a rushed judgment in this case. When the government runs out of leads or cannot develop them and points to the surviving spouse in cases like this one, the possibility of an unjust conviction increases.”
Flynn became known in the United States in 2013 after participating in American Idol, where he identified himself as a “music pastor.” He later left his religious leadership role and worked at his family’s business Richard D. Smith & Sons Inc., which supplies churches and shopping centers.
Ashley Flynn was a volleyball coach at a local high school. Her death has affected her community deeply. The couple had two daughters who are currently in elementary school.
