FOX Corporation, a major media company based in New York, is showing interest in entering the Costa Rican football television rights market. The company adopted its current name in 2019 after the sale of 21st Century Fox to The Walt Disney Company.
Following this transaction, FOX retained its news division, radio operations, and Fox Channel. Other properties, such as Fox Sports channels in Central America, became part of ESPN under Disney’s ownership starting in 2021. In some regions like Mexico, due to regulatory requirements, the Fox Sports brand was transferred to Grupo Multimedios Lauman. In Argentina and other countries, entities such as Mediapro now hold the rights to use the Fox Sports brand.
The potential move into Costa Rica comes from FOX Corporation itself. Rupert Murdoch owns the organization; he launched Fox in 1985 after acquiring 20th Century Fox a year earlier.
In 2025, FOX made an investment in Mexican sports broadcasting through Caliente TV and Tubi streaming platforms. These efforts led to significant partnerships with Liga MX teams such as Pachuca. Caliente TV has since rebranded as FOX One and broadcasts not only Mexican football but also other sports like NFL games and Major League Baseball.
Tubi operates as an entertainment application offering movies, television channels, and live sports events including Mexican football matches. In Costa Rica specifically, Tubi is known for streaming games involving Pumas—a team featuring Keylor Navas—and reported reaching 100 million active users worldwide in 2025.
Due to these successes, sources from La NaciĂłn report that FOX Corporation has decided to expand further into Central America with a focus on Costa Rica.
Tigo Sports may serve as the initial entry point for FOX’s expansion by providing access through a dedicated sports channel. Teams currently contracted with Tigo—Puntarenas, Guadalupe, and Sporting—would be among the first involved if this partnership materializes.
