The Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) has opened a new call for proposals to purchase energy from solar power plants with capacities of up to 20 megawatts. The submission period began on September 4 and will close on October 8.

According to ICE, the selected projects will help diversify Costa Rica’s renewable energy matrix and improve its ability to adapt to climate variability. All proposed plants must be located in Puntarenas province. Once operational at full capacity, these facilities are expected to generate enough electricity to supply approximately 65,000 households.

ICE plans to select only new projects, with a total combined capacity not exceeding 100 megawatts. This initiative follows the recent allocation of 130 MW in solar generation and 80 MW in wind generation over the past year, as well as the planned construction of the San Antonio, Abangares, and Las Delicias solar plants by ICE itself.

The additional infrastructure is intended to meet rising national electricity demand, create jobs, and stimulate both local and national economies.

To qualify, project proposals must have a valid eligibility declaration as of the date of the call’s publication and preliminary connection assignments for one of four substations: Parrita, Jacó, Cóbano or Santa Rita.

Interested parties are required to submit all documentation specified in the Terms of Reference for this process. These terms can be requested via email at mmorelli@ice.go.cr or jlopezm@ice.go.cr.
