Guadalupe FC was officially relegated from the Primera División after losing 5-0 to Deportivo Saprissa on April 23. The loss marked the end of Guadalupe’s time in Costa Rica’s top football league, following only one season at this level.
The outcome is significant for both the club and its supporters, as it underscores the challenges faced by newly promoted teams in maintaining their status among established competitors.
Throughout the season, Guadalupe struggled to find consistency. The team collected 13 points during the Torneo Apertura 2025 and added another 14 in Clausura 2026, totaling 27 points. In contrast, San Carlos managed to avoid relegation with a total of 33 points.
Guadalupe experienced frequent changes in coaching staff during this campaign. The season began under Mexican coach Fernando Palomeque, who was dismissed in December 2025. Mauricio Wright then took over but was also unable to reverse the team’s fortunes and was subsequently let go. The final matches were overseen by Alfredo Morales and Robert Garbanzo as interim coaches.
Both Guadalupe and Santa Ana spent just one season in the top division before being relegated. Their performances revealed weaknesses on both offense and defense that prevented them from securing enough points to remain at this level.
Looking ahead, Guadalupe faces a period of rebuilding as they prepare for life outside of Costa Rica’s highest football division.
