The Department of Traffic Light Systems at the General Directorate of Traffic Engineering is urging the public to use available phone and online channels to report any malfunctions or damage they observe in traffic lights.

This request comes as heavy rains have led to an increase in failures within these systems. The department notes that timely reports from users help focus resources and ensure proper repairs for these essential devices, which are crucial for maintaining order and road safety.

“Reports allow us to concentrate our efforts and provide proper repair for these key devices for road order and safety,” a spokesperson stated.

Users can report damaged traffic lights through several methods: by email at semaforos@transito.go.cr, via Facebook at Semáforos Costa Rica (https://www.facebook.com/semaforoscostarica/), by calling or sending WhatsApp messages to 8975 2270, 6170 9279, or 6260 3271, and through the emergency service at 9-1-1.

When making a report, it is important to provide the exact location of the faulty system along with a brief description of the issue—such as a burnt-out light, fixed or flashing signals, misaligned signal heads, damaged buttons, or malfunctioning pedestrian audio signals.

Information provided by users is listed and scheduled for intervention based on location so that work trips can be planned efficiently. On average, response times for repairs are up to 15 days in rural areas outside the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM) and within 24 hours inside GAM.

So far this year, user reports have enabled the department to address problems in 1,452 traffic light systems across the country. Additionally, another 672 systems have been serviced preventively with tasks such as full-system checks, timing extraction, control cleaning, repairs, and inventory updates of device components.
