The International Day against Bullying and Cyberbullying was observed on May 2 to highlight the need to eliminate violence that affects millions of children and adolescents. The day, proposed by the organization Bullying sin Fronteras to UNESCO in 2013, serves as a reminder of the impact bullying has in both schools and digital environments.
The observance aims to draw attention to bullying as a form of violence that can leave deep marks on mental health and emotional development. It is not considered mere ‘child’s play’ or something that should be endured for personal growth. Instead, it calls for action so educational centers and online spaces become places of peace, respect, and growth.
Efforts to prevent and intervene in bullying are described as a shared responsibility among parents, educators, and students. Key measures include teaching empathy at home and school by valuing diversity; encouraging individuals not to remain silent when witnessing someone suffering; promoting responsible use of social networks through digital education; and creating trustworthy channels where students feel safe expressing their fears without judgment.
The statement ends with an emphatic call: “Zero tolerance for bullying and cyberbullying!”
This annual event seeks ongoing engagement from all members of the educational community to ensure safer learning environments.
