The Ministry of Education marked International Water Day on March 22, emphasizing the importance of freshwater and the need for sustainable management. The United Nations has warned that more than 2.1 billion people still lack access to safe water services, which affects their quality of life and societal development. This day was established by the United Nations in 1993 as a global call to action to protect one of the planet’s most vital resources.
The observance is part of several international days recognized in March. On March 21, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is commemorated, as proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly since 1966. Its goal is to promote equality, respect, and dignity for all people while raising awareness about eliminating racism and all forms of racial discrimination worldwide.
Additionally, World Down Syndrome Day is observed annually to increase public awareness and recognize the inherent dignity and valuable contributions of people with intellectual disabilities as promoters of well-being and diversity in their communities. This day has been designated by the United Nations General Assembly since 2011.
Other events include a special session of the Government Council held at Hacienda Santa Rosa on March 20, remembering the Battle of Santa Rosa and honoring those who fought for their country during the National Campaign of 1856-1857. The meeting took place at Corrales de piedra de la Casona de Santa Rosa.
In education initiatives, coordinators from institutions in UNESCO’s Associated Schools Network participated in a national meeting on March 5 to plan strategic actions for building peaceful and sustainable futures through transformative education from 2026 to 2029. The University Latinoamericana de Ciencia y TecnologÃa (ULACIT) also contributed to developing an artificial intelligence guide for teachers, led by the Ministry in partnership with UNESCO and Costa Rica’s United Nations System.
The Ministry also noted celebrations such as Francophonie Day, which promotes French language and cultural diversity globally since its establishment in 1970 with the creation of the International Organization of La Francophonie.
