José Saturnino Cardozo, coach of Municipal Liberia, said on Apr. 22 that his team deserved to reach the semifinals of the Clausura 2026 tournament after defeating Sporting FC 1-0 at the Puente Piedra stadium in Grecia.

The achievement marks Cardozo’s second consecutive qualification for the playoffs with Municipal Liberia. The coach is currently considering whether to remain with the club or pursue opportunities abroad.

“I’m happy with what we achieved. The players deserved this qualification. They were warriors. They are friends, always work hard and never complain. They had that desire, that hope, and they made it possible by advancing to the playoffs for a second consecutive time,” Cardozo said during a press conference.

Cardozo noted that his squad faced challenges at the start of the season due to some players arriving out of shape and injuries affecting performance throughout the campaign. He described reaching this stage as a reward for their effort and sacrifice.

“We go step by step, we keep growing. Last year we made it into the playoffs and I think against Alajuelense we played our best match of the championship, but lost 0-1 despite dominating. We were superior and could have won even by a scoreline of 3-1, but that’s football,” Cardozo said.

The coach also praised his team’s commitment in training sessions: “In training my players always give everything. I am very demanding and beyond matches I highlight how well they get along as a group—they are always willing to give their best every session. It’s hard work and I congratulate them.” He also pointed out achieving seven consecutive wins—a record for Municipal Liberia—as evidence of their dedication.

Looking ahead to their next match against Alajuelense at Edgardo Baltodano stadium in Liberia, Cardozo confirmed he will select those in top condition: “We will analyze what benefits the institution most. We know players always want to play so we’ll field those who are best prepared because we’re still fighting for both Copa Centroamericana qualification and better league positioning,” he concluded.
