Two fatal accidents and a major sporting event were reported by La Nación, a prominent Costa Rican newspaper, in a series of posts on January 20, 2026.

In the early hours of Monday, two men died following a head-on collision between two motorcycles in Tuis de Turrialba, located in the province of Cartago. According to La Nación’s post from January 20: “Dos hombres fallecieron la madrugada de este lunes tras una colisión frontal entre dos motocicletas en el sector de Tuis de Turrialba, en la provincia de Cartago.”

Later that morning, the newspaper reported another tragic incident involving an elderly man. On January 20, La Nación posted: “Hallan fallecido a adulto mayor de 81 años que estaba desaparecido desde el 11 de enero en Paraíso de Cartago; fue localizado cerca de un río.” The man had been missing since January 11 and was found deceased near a river in Paraíso de Cartago.

In addition to these incidents, La Nación highlighted the ongoing National Games. In its third post on January 20, it stated: “Los Juegos Nacionales reúnen a los mejores deportistas del país, incluso aquellos que han destacado fuera de nuestras fronteras”. The National Games are an annual event in Costa Rica that bring together top athletes from across the country and often feature participants who have excelled internationally.

Cartago is one of Costa Rica’s seven provinces and frequently features in national news due to its population centers and local events. The National Games serve as an important platform for young athletes aspiring to represent Costa Rica at international competitions.
