La Nación, a major Costa Rican news outlet, reported on November 16, 2025, about two significant issues affecting the country: a homicide in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí and growing concerns over diabetes rates.
In its first report of the day, La Nación shared news of a violent crime: “Hombre encuentra a su hermano asesinado en una vivienda de Puerto Viejo, Sarapiquí” (November 16, 2025). The incident involved a man discovering his brother murdered inside a residence in Puerto Viejo, located in the Sarapiquí region.
Later that evening, La Nación addressed public health concerns with two posts. The first highlighted official alarm regarding diabetes cases: “Ministerio de Salud preocupado por avalancha en casos de diabetes en Costa Rica; descubra las provincias más afectadas” (November 16, 2025). This was followed by another update providing more detail on projected case numbers: “Diabetes en Costa Rica podría alcanzar una cifra récord de 16.000 nuevos casos este año, según proyecciones del Ministerio de Salud.” (November 16, 2025).
The Ministry of Health’s warning comes amid rising rates of non-communicable diseases in Costa Rica. In recent years, diabetes has become an increasing concern for health authorities due to changing lifestyles and demographic shifts. According to official projections cited by La Nación, new diabetes diagnoses could reach as high as 16,000 this year—potentially setting a national record.
The homicide reported in Puerto Viejo also reflects ongoing security challenges faced by some regions within Costa Rica. Law enforcement agencies continue to investigate such incidents as part of broader efforts to address violent crime.
