La Nación, a prominent Costa Rican newspaper, published several updates on January 9, 2026, covering international investigations, legal proceedings, and major trade agreements.

In one post from January 9, 2026, La Nación reported: “Unidad Investigativa de ‘El Tiempo’, de Colombia, rastrea red de testaferros que ocultarían giros y bienes en 10 países.” The investigative unit of ‘El Tiempo’, a leading Colombian newspaper, is tracking a network of front men allegedly hiding transfers and assets across ten countries.

Later the same day, La Nación shared news about legal accusations involving a former magistrate: “El exmagistrado Celso Gamboa fue acusado por cohecho propio tras aceptar un viaje a Panamá pagado presuntamente por Juan Carlos Bolaños.” This tweet states that former magistrate Celso Gamboa was charged with bribery after accepting a trip to Panama allegedly paid for by Juan Carlos Bolaños.

A third update highlighted a significant development in international trade. On January 9, 2026, La Nación posted: “La Unión Europea aprobó el histórico acuerdo con el Mercosur tras décadas de espera. Conozca los detalles de la que será la mayor zona de libre comercio mundial”. The European Union has approved an agreement with Mercosur after decades of negotiations. This pact will create the largest free trade area in the world.

Mercosur is an economic bloc comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. The European Union-Mercosur agreement has been under negotiation since 1999 and aims to reduce tariffs and promote trade between both regions.
