La Nación, a major Costa Rican newspaper, published a series of posts on November 13, 2025, highlighting testimonies from migrants about alleged abuses in El Salvador and reporting on international unemployment data.
In its first post, La Nación shared migrant accounts of mistreatment in El Salvador: “De patadas a agresiones sexuales: testimonios de migrantes confirman ‘política de tortura’ en El Salvador” (November 13, 2025).
The publication followed up by citing an investigation from The New York Times. According to the post dated November 13, 2025: “‘The New York Times’ entrevistó a 40 migrantes que testificaron haber recibido disparos, patadas, ataques con gas lacrimógeno y hasta los obligaron a practicar relaciones sexuales a guardias encapuchados.”
In another post the same day, La Nación addressed issues with international labor statistics: “Falta de datos de Costa Rica, Chile, Reino Unido y EE. UU. impide a la OCDE calcular la tasa de desempleo de setiembre” (November 13, 2025). The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) was unable to calculate September’s unemployment rate due to missing data from Costa Rica, Chile, the United Kingdom and the United States.
El Salvador has faced increasing scrutiny over its treatment of migrants under President Nayib Bukele’s administration. Reports from human rights organizations have previously raised concerns regarding alleged torture and abuse of detainees and migrants within the country’s borders.
The OECD regularly publishes monthly unemployment rates based on data submitted by member countries. When key countries do not provide timely information—as was the case with Costa Rica, Chile, the UK and US—the organization cannot produce comprehensive or comparable figures for that period.
