Two historic radio stations and two well-known television channels in Costa Rica will not participate in the upcoming Sutel auction, according to recent posts by La Nación, a major Costa Rican news outlet.
Additionally, on the same day, La Nación posted about an unexpected press conference regarding the national football team: “Federación Costarricense de Fútbol convoca a sorpresiva conferencia de prensa sobre la Selección de Costa Rica https://t.co/BcVHHRaJGu”.
The Superintendencia de Telecomunicaciones (Sutel) is responsible for regulating telecommunications in Costa Rica. Auctions held by Sutel typically involve the allocation of frequencies for radio and television broadcasting. The decision by prominent broadcasters to withdraw from both open television and the Sutel auction could signal significant changes in the country’s media landscape.
The Cámara Nacional de Radiodifusión (Canara), representing radio broadcasters in Costa Rica, was mentioned as providing commentary on this development. The absence of these outlets from future auctions may impact media diversity and public access to information.
