Municipal Liberia defeated San Carlos with a score of 5-1 at the Edgardo Baltodano stadium, moving into fourth place in the Torneo Clausura 2026 standings and pushing Liga Deportiva Alajuelense out of the classification zone, according to an April 7 report.

The result is significant as it changes the standings with only four matches left in the regular phase. Liberia, led by Paraguayan coach José Saturnino Cardozo, now has 21 points while Alajuelense remains at 19 after drawing against Guadalupe FC.

Mexican forward Erick ‘Cubo’ Torres scored twice for Liberia, bringing his total to six goals in the tournament. The current leaders are Club Sport Herediano with 28 points, followed by Deportivo Saprissa with 27 and Cartaginés with 26. Despite their strong performance against San Carlos, Liberia faces a challenging schedule ahead as they will play three of their main competitors for playoff spots.

In upcoming fixtures, Liberia will face Deportivo Saprissa away next Sunday before hosting Cartaginés and visiting Sporting. They will close out the regular season against Alajuelense. In matches earlier this year, Liberia has not lost to Alajuelense across both league and cup competitions.

Alajuelense must now rely on other teams dropping points while winning their remaining games to return to playoff contention. Meanwhile, San Carlos continues to lose ground in its pursuit of advancing and faces Guadalupe FC next weekend with only a six-point cushion above them in the cumulative table.

The broader implications of this result could affect final playoff placements as several teams remain closely matched near the cutoff line for qualification.
