The lower level (tunnel) of the La Lima interchange, measuring 435 meters in length and featuring two lanes—one for each direction—was opened to traffic on Sunday, September 14. This new route enables direct travel between El Guarco and San José.
According to the Road Infrastructure and Public-Private Partnerships Program (PIV-APP), a ramp connecting El Guarco with Cartago was also opened at the same time. The new access includes a 40-meter bridge over the Taras River, which is expected to improve mobility in one of Costa Rica’s busiest areas.
“With these openings, travel between Cartago and the capital becomes faster, while work continues on the roundabouts known as La Lima and Zona Franca, as well as the bridge located to the right of Cartago’s exit. This will complete internal connections between Cartago and this sector’s industrial area,” said Efraín Zeledón, Minister of Public Works and Transport.
Work is ongoing to finish installing lighting systems, improve access to businesses, complete marginal roads, and place vertical and horizontal signage aimed at enhancing road safety.
The Taras–Avenida 23-La Lima interchange project aims to improve traffic flow into and out of Cartago, reduce travel times, and strengthen road safety for thousands who use this important route daily.
