Mary Munive, Minister of Health, appeared before the Legislative Assembly’s Energy Commission to discuss Bill No. 25.271, titled “Law to Promote the Energy Valorization of Organic Waste and Strengthening Sustainable Generation.” The bill aims to establish the first state-run biodigester in Costa Rica to convert organic waste into energy.
Minister Munive explained that organic waste currently accounts for about half of all garbage generated in the Greater Metropolitan Area. She stated that passing this legislation would help reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills, generate energy, and create significant savings in waste management.
She also expressed hope that legislators would support the bill so it could be voted on soon. “This would allow us to begin the necessary processes and move toward a structural solution to the waste problem within an estimated period of two to three years,” said Munive.
The minister called on citizens to take an active role by starting to separate their waste at home and urged local governments to strengthen differentiated collection as a key part of integrated and sustainable waste management.
