The Directorate General of Road Education announced on March 24 that drivers who need to take a road re-education course to reduce accumulated points on their driver’s license must enroll in the course listed as “regular vehicles,” regardless of whether the points were accumulated with a motorcycle or car license.
This clarification was issued because, unlike regular licensing courses where vehicle type is differentiated, the point reduction courses do not yet distinguish between vehicle categories. Therefore, users needing this type of course should only select the “vehicles” category when enrolling.
Drivers can check their accumulated points by calling 2522-0900 extension 5. The ideal situation is to have zero points; however, those with four or fewer points can renew their license without taking any additional course. If a driver has five or more points, it becomes necessary to complete one of these courses before renewing the license.
There are three types of road re-education courses available: Recovery of Points (which reduces accumulated points by 50% and is open to any driver wishing to lower their total), License Renewal due to Partial Loss of Points (for those who cannot reach four allowable renewal points even after a 50% reduction), and Re-education due to Total Loss of Points (for drivers seeking reinstatement after one year’s suspension for reaching the maximum allowed).
To enroll in any course, individuals must pay ¢5,000 at an authorized financial institution, obtain system access credentials in person at any Road Education office (no appointment required), and register online at https://servicios.educacionvial.go.cr/Formularios/MatriculaPruebaTeorica.
A table details which course applies depending on accumulated points and license validity. If a driver reaches the maximum allowed score based on their license’s validity period, they face a one-year suspension before being eligible for reinstatement through the appropriate re-education course.
