The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock announced on March 27 the implementation of a digital prescription system for the use of high-toxicity agrochemicals. This new tool is designed to modernize how these chemicals are controlled and to improve traceability across the country.

The introduction of the digital prescription marks a significant change in pesticide management by replacing paper forms with a secure online platform. The new system will record essential information such as producer details, crop type, location, dosage, and technical recommendations.

A transition period will begin on April 17, during which both physical and digital formats can be used. Starting July 21, only digital prescriptions will be accepted for commercial transactions involving higher-risk pesticides.

Developed by the State Phytosanitary Service, the platform is integrated with agricultural producers’ digital records. It includes identity validation mechanisms and links to registered farms, ensuring that only authorized professionals issue prescriptions. The process aims to be transparent and efficient for all users.

Officials say that this measure will allow precise monitoring of pesticide use—including quantities applied and locations—which strengthens technical oversight capabilities. Producers need only ensure their production units are up-to-date in ministry records to participate in this new process.

With this initiative, authorities aim to further digitize agriculture while providing greater control over substances with significant impact. The move is expected to support better decision-making tools within Costa Rica’s agricultural sector.
