The Ministry of Education announced on May 1 a series of commemorations and educational initiatives, including the observance of International Workers’ Day. The announcement highlighted the historical significance of May 1, which has been recognized since 1889 to honor labor movements worldwide.
International Workers’ Day serves as a reminder that labor rights are the result of struggle, organization, and human dignity. The Ministry emphasized the importance of valuing those who contribute daily to building a fairer society.
The announcement also included updates on recent investments in educational infrastructure. The Ministry reported improvements for schools such as Escuela Playa Blanca in Lepanto and new projects like the construction of La Florida school and upgrades at Liceo Rural in Isla Venado, coinciding with a presidential tour in Pacific islands and Puntarenas.
Additionally, night schools in Quepos, Jacó, and La Julieta have implemented an educational reintegration project called ‘Rescate’ since 2025. This initiative aims to support students attending night classes through solidarity, communication, and empathy so they can complete their academic formation.
Other events include celebrations for World Book and Copyright Day on April 23—established by UNESCO—and Earth Day on April 22 as proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2009. More than 300 students participated recently in the launch event for ‘Costa Rica Lee,’ an initiative promoting daily reading habits across the country. The Ministry also invited all primary education communities to participate in the twelfth edition of OLCOMEP (Olimpiada Costarricense de Matemática para la Educación Primaria) scheduled for this year.
These announcements reflect ongoing efforts by Costa Rica’s education authorities to promote learning opportunities while recognizing important international observances.
