Each year, the International Day of Education is observed to highlight the role of education in promoting peace and development. The United Nations General Assembly established this day in 2018.
For 2026, the theme set by the United Nations is “The power of youth in co-creating education.” According to the UN, people under 30 make up more than half of the global population and play a key role as both beneficiaries and stakeholders in educational programs. Their future depends on these initiatives.
The Ministry of Education (MEP) announced that on Thursday, February 5, 2026, the Digital Regionalization Module (ReDi) will open for post-secondary scholarship applications. This date replaces previously announced deadlines. Applications can be submitted online at https://mep.go.cr/becas-postsecundaria starting at 7:00 a.m. Requirements are available in document DVM-A-DPE-UB-0002-2026.pdf on MEP’s website.
The application period runs from January 19 to February 27.
The Department of Electronic Documentation and Information (DDIE), part of the Directorate of Technological Resources in Education (DRTE) within MEP, has launched its new website at https://ddie.mep.go.cr/.
MEP also reported a significant investment in 19 educational centers that will participate in the National Sports Games Limón 2026. The selection was made jointly with the Costa Rican Institute of Sport as part of a public-public partnership.
Additionally, MEP developed several online materials for final-year primary and secondary students who will take part in the expanded session of the National Standardized Summative Test scheduled for February.
“The power of youth in co-creating education,” is the theme for 2026 as designated by the United Nations.
