The Ministry of Education announced on April 22 the commemoration of International Mother Earth Day, an event established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2009. The day is intended to promote harmony with nature and balance economic, social, and environmental needs for current and future generations.
International Mother Earth Day serves as a reminder of the importance of environmental awareness and sustainable development. It encourages communities to reflect on their relationship with the planet and take steps toward protecting natural resources.
As part of its activities, the Ministry invited the entire educational community to participate in the twelfth edition of the Costa Rican Mathematics Olympiad for Primary Education (OLCOMEP) in 2026. Additionally, nearly 15,000 people from Los Santos and Puriscal are expected to attend a performance titled “1001 noches.”
The government also reported that it has closed negotiations regarding the Special Fund for Higher Education (FEES), citing what it described as irrational demands from university rectors. In other recent events, fourteen students from Lycée Polyvalent Régional Camille-Sée in Colmar, France visited Costa Rica this week to meet with sixty-one students from Colegio Humanístico de Sarapiquí. The exchange aimed to foster understanding about environmental issues and share cultural experiences between both regions.
On April 17, President Rodrigo Chaves Robles and Minister of Public Education Leonardo Sánchez Hernández visited educational facilities alongside technical staff to supervise ongoing construction work. The ministry also highlighted other initiatives such as “Escuelas Fantásticas” and ambassador programs aimed at strengthening education.
