The Ministry of Health in Costa Rica has started a series of fumigation efforts in Esparza following the confirmation of a Chikungunya case. The positive case was reported by the Costa Rican Institute for Research and Teaching in Nutrition and Health (INCIENSA).
Fumigations are taking place in the EspÃritu Santo area and will cover all of Esparza. The first cycle began on Thursday, with subsequent applications scheduled for Friday and Saturday. A second round is planned for Monday, January 26, followed by a third cycle on Monday, February 2.
Chikungunya is caused by a virus transmitted through mosquito bites. There have been no reports of local transmission of this virus in Costa Rica since 2017.
Common symptoms include high fever (over 39°C), joint pain and swelling, headache, nausea, and general discomfort.
The Ministry stated: “The Ministry of Health maintains active epidemiological surveillance and coordinates actions to control mosquitoes, with the aim of protecting the population and preventing the spread of the disease.”
Officials urge residents to seek information only from official channels. The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to timely prevention and care regarding diseases.
