The Ministry of Health has confirmed a second case of measles in the country. The diagnosis was made by the National Virological Reference Center Inciensa. The patient is a minor female who is currently stable and in isolation.
Technical teams from the Ministry of Health and the Costa Rican Social Security Fund have responded to the case and are carrying out epidemiological actions. Authorities are analyzing possible factors related to how the infection occurred. More information will be provided once investigations are complete.
Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that usually begins with fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes. A skin rash appears later, starting on the face and spreading to other parts of the body. A person infected with measles can transmit the virus from four days before until four days after the appearance of the rash. The disease spreads easily through airborne transmission when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, especially in crowded places such as airports, airplanes, public transportation, and tourist sites.
“Once investigations are complete, more information will be provided,” stated officials from the Ministry of Health.
