On January 27, the Ministry of Health and the Municipal Police conducted an operation at a shopping center in San José following reports of possible irregularities related to the advertising, promotion, and sponsorship of tobacco products and their derivatives.
Authorities reported that in a designated smoke- and vapor-free area of the shopping center, vape devices were allegedly given as gifts to participants. This action is considered a violation of articles 5 and 12 of Law No. 9028, which governs tobacco products and related items.
During the intervention, officials also inspected a store selling these products. They identified suspected violations concerning product labeling requirements as outlined by Executive Decree No. 37778-S.
A total of 94 units were seized during the operation. The confiscated items have been handed over to relevant authorities for administrative processing.
Authorities stated that they are continuing with investigations to verify events and enforce national legislation. The case remains under administrative review.
The participating institutions said: “We reiterate our commitment to protecting public health and ensuring compliance with current regulations.”
