The Ministry of Health announced on April 11 that a diesel spill occurred in a stormwater canal connected to the Bartolo river in the province of Limón. The ministry said the incident was managed immediately by RECOPE, with support from the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ), and that containment efforts were successful.
This information is important because fuel spills can threaten water sources and local ecosystems. According to the Ministry of Health, although some fuel entered the canal, ongoing cleanup and containment work is being carried out using specialized materials.
Officials stated that there has been no impact on marine environments and confirmed, in coordination with the Costa Rican Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (AyA), that there is no effect on drinking water sources. The ministry said potable water remains safe for consumption.
Technical teams continue to assess the area to ensure full recovery. The Ministry of Health said it will follow up on this case and take necessary measures to guarantee complete site cleanup and environmental protection. Updates will be provided as needed.
