The Ministry of Health announced on May 4 that authorities responded to an alert in the canton of Abangares, Guanacaste, regarding the alleged illegal transport of cyanide on April 30.
This incident is important as it concerns public safety and the prevention of hazardous materials being transported illegally. Cyanide is a dangerous substance that can pose significant health risks if not handled properly.
According to the Ministry, a coordinated effort involving the Public Force, Judicial Investigation Agency, Fire Department, and Prosecutor’s Office led to the detention of a vehicle carrying 20 sacks—amounting to 600 kilograms—of material suspected to be cyanide. The cargo was secured and moved to a safe location under custody for technical analysis to confirm its composition.
The Fire Department inspected the area and determined there was no immediate risk to local residents. This finding has provided reassurance for nearby communities. The Ministry said it will continue monitoring the case alongside other authorities and will take necessary actions to protect public health and prevent any potential hazards.
Further updates will be provided as technical analyses are completed.
