The Ministry of Health announced on May 4 that it responded to an alert from the Costa Rican Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers regarding traces of substances compatible with hydrocarbons detected at the El Rosario water intake in Vázquez de Coronado.
This issue is important because it concerns the safety and quality of drinking water supplied to local residents. Immediate action was taken by authorities to prevent any risk to public health.
As a preventive measure, the aqueduct authority closed the water intake. The Ministry of Health in Coronado, working together with AyA and other institutions, inspected the site and identified a possible point source of contamination linked to a commercial establishment. “The Ministry of Health ordered the sanitary closure of the establishment, thus preventing any impact on people’s health,” according to the statement.
Efforts are ongoing with support from the Municipality of Coronado and RECOPE for cleaning, verification, and environmental mitigation work aimed at protecting the water source. The ministry said current technical information indicates that “the water supplied to the population does not pose a risk to health.” The Ministry also reaffirmed its commitment “to maintain permanent surveillance over supply sources and act firmly to safeguard public health.”
Further updates will be provided through official channels as more information becomes available.
